The meaning of these verbs can vary depending on the context. They express desire, ability, possibility or necessity. Remember that the main verb after modal verbs is always in the infinitive, without Å.
SKAL is used to express a plan or intention, where you or someone make a specific decision. Do not use it in sentences aimed at people such as:
Du skal gjøre denne oppgaven/You must do this task .
This is understood as an order, and therefore will probably offend people. We prefer to use KAN in questions when we want employees or someone to do something for us, ex.
Kan du gjøre denne oppgaven?/Can you do this task?
However, you can use SKAL when you ask people about their plans or when you refer to your own plans/intentions ex.
Hva skal du gjøre i morgen?/ What are you doing tomorrow?
